Meet the Person #

Liu Biao appointed Huang Zhong General of the Household to defend You County in Changsha with Liu Pan. After Cao Cao pacified Jing Province, he retained his post under Han Xuan, Administrator of Changsha. When Liu Bei pacified the southern commanderies, Huang Zhong joined him and followed him into Shu.

Against Liu Zhang, Huang Zhong often led assaults and broke enemy lines. After Yi Province was pacified, he became General Who Attacks the Caitiffs. In Jian'an 24 at Mount Dingjun, he led an attack, defeated and killed Xiahou Yuan, and was then promoted to General Who Campaigns against the West.

As King of Hanzhong, Liu Bei intended to appoint Huang Zhong General of the Rear. Zhuge Liang noted that his reputation differed from Guan Yu's and Ma Chao's and feared Guan Yu, far away in Jing Province, might object. Liu Bei said he would explain it himself and made the appointment. Huang Zhong died the following year and was later posthumously titled Marquis Gang.
