Three Layers #

Historical SourcesSanguozhi (Records of the Three Kingdoms)Provides historical records; the main text and material quoted in Pei Songzhi's annotations within the same volume must also be distinguished.
Literary TraditionRomance of the Three KingdomsShapes familiar episodes and character images. Its dramatic power is not a verbatim historical record.
This WorkShiji SanguoUses historical research as a framework to reconstruct how people speak, wait, and choose. Reconstructed scenes are creative writing.

Comparison Method #

Each public case separately presents the novel's treatment, historical accounts, what can and cannot be known, and the book's counterpart (to be added after final-manuscript QA). For an example, see Hua Xiong: Guan Yu and the Battle of Yangren. “Not recorded in the historical sources” does not directly establish that something could never have happened.

When citing a specific claim, also identify its original source, whether it comes from the main text or a quoted annotation, and your access date. The # beside each section heading links to that passage. This site's synthesis is not the original text of an ancient work.
