Meet the Person #

The “Sun Polu and Sun Taoni Biographies” begin with his early military career, recording his participation in suppressing the Yellow Turbans and later appointment as Administrator of Changsha. Against Dong Zhuo, he led his army to victory at Yangren; the biography lists Hua Xiong and others among the enemy generals killed.

Sun Jian's military activities were part of the Sun family's rise, but he cannot be retrospectively described as an emperor who had already founded Wu during his lifetime. Sun Quan's posthumous honors must be separated from Sun Jian's status in life.

Limits of the Evidence #

The biography records Sun Jian's army's victory; it does not identify Sun Jian as personally killing Hua Xiong.
