Meet the Person #

Cheng Pu followed Sun Jian against the Yellow Turbans and helped defeat Dong Zhuo's army at Yangren. After Sun Jian's death he followed Sun Ce on campaigns and across the river to Jiangdong; when Sun Ce was surrounded, he broke through the enemy formation to protect his escape.

After Sun Ce's death, Cheng Pu, Zhang Zhao, and others assisted Sun Quan. Later, he and Zhou Yu served as the Left and Right Commanders, defeated Cao Cao's army at Wulin, then attacked Nan Commandery and forced Cao Ren to withdraw.

Cheng Pu was the senior in age among the Sun family's generals. After Zhou Yu's death, he succeeded as Administrator of Nan Commandery. When Sun Quan assigned part of Jing Province to Liu Bei, Cheng Pu again took charge of Jiangxia. His changes of office should be read in sequence, not as a permanent lifelong faction title.

Separate the biography's account from the death story quoted in the annotations. His seniority does not establish that he alone commanded every battle.
