How the Novel Tells It #
Chapter 5 creates the “warm wine” scene: Guan Yu leaves the tent, kills Hua Xiong, and returns.
What the Historical Records Preserve #
Sun Jian led his army to defeat Dong Zhuo's forces at Yangren. The biography describes the result as the beheading of their commander Hua Xiong and others.
What Cannot Be Inferred #
“Sun Jian's army killed Hua Xiong” does not mean “Sun Jian personally killed Hua Xiong.” The historical sentence does not identify the actual killer. Guan Yu's sortie in the novel also cannot be directly treated as a historical record.
