Meet the Person #

Zhao Yun originally served Gongsun Zan. When Liu Bei was sent to help Tian Kai resist Yuan Shao, Zhao Yun accompanied him and commanded his cavalry. Pursued by Cao Cao at Changban in Dangyang, Liu Bei's young son Liu Shan was carried to safety by Zhao Yun, who also protected Lady Gan. The main text does not provide the Romance-style full list of generals killed in a lone charge.

After Liu Bei turned to attack Liu Zhang, Zhuge Liang led Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei, and others west upriver to pacify commanderies and counties separately. Zhao Yun advanced along the outer river route and eventually joined them at Chengdu. After Chengdu was pacified, he became General Who Assists the Army.

During Jianxing he accompanied Zhuge Liang to Hanzhong. In the northern campaign he and Deng Zhi resisted Cao Zhen at Jigu. Outnumbered, they suffered a setback, but he regrouped and held firm, avoiding a rout. After withdrawal he was demoted to General Who Guards the Army. He later died and was posthumously titled Marquis Shunping.
