Meet the Person #
Zhang Miao was from Shouzhang in Dongping, was known for chivalry in his youth, and served as Administrator of Chenliu. The main text explicitly calls Cao Cao and Yuan Shao his friends; he rose with Cao Cao against Dong Zhuo. After Zhang Miao criticized Yuan Shao, Yuan Shao wanted Cao Cao to kill him, but Cao Cao refused.
When Lü Bu left Yuan Shao, he clasped hands with Zhang Miao and swore an oath. In Xingping 1, Zhang Miao accepted Chen Gong's and others' proposal to welcome Lü Bu as Governor of Yan Province. This phase was a political and military alliance; early friendships are not permanent faction membership.
After defeat in Yan Province, Zhang Miao followed Lü Bu, leaving his brother Zhang Chao and family to defend Yongqiu. He later went to Yuan Shu for aid but was killed by his followers before arriving. An unrealized request for help is not an established alliance.

Limits of the Evidence #
The early-friendship label is time-bounded and does not conceal later breaks with Yuan Shao and Cao Cao.

- Lü BuZhang Miao — Lü Bu: allies (Yan Province)Sanguozhi, Volume 7, Lü Bu and Zang Hong Biographies ↗
Related Deeds and Periods
Zhang Miao and Lü Bu clasped hands and swore an oath; later Zhang Miao, Chen Gong, and others welcomed him as Governor of Yan Province. This line is limited to their cooperation in Yan.
- Cao CaoZhang Miao — Cao Cao: friends (early years)Sanguozhi, Volume 7, Lü Bu and Zang Hong Biographies ↗
Related Deeds and Periods
The main text explicitly calls them friends and records Cao Cao's refusal of Yuan Shao's demand to kill Zhang Miao. Zhang Miao later welcomed Lü Bu and broke with Cao Cao, so “friends” cannot be treated as a lifelong status.
- Yuan ShaoZhang Miao — Yuan Shao: friends (early years)Sanguozhi, Volume 7, Lü Bu and Zang Hong Biographies ↗
Related Deeds and Periods
The main text first records their friendship, then Zhang Miao's criticism of Yuan Shao and Yuan Shao's desire to kill him. The label refers only to their early friendship.
