Meet the Person #
Ma Chao's biography records Han Sui and Ma Teng rising together and later going to Chang'an. Han Sui was appointed General Who Guards the West and returned to Jincheng; his relationship with Ma Teng later turned hostile.
After taking command of his forces, Ma Chao allied with Han Sui and advanced to Tong Pass. Cao Cao used Jia Xu's plan to divide them; mutual suspicion contributed to the coalition's defeat. Only their cooperation at Tong Pass is marked here as a time-bounded alliance.
Approximate sequence, not a timeline drawn to scale.
Limits of the Evidence #
Ma Teng and Han Sui later fell out; the alliance must be limited to its period, not described as lifelong friendship.

Related Deeds and Periods
The main text of Ma Chao's biography records that both rose in the western provinces and later jointly led their forces to Chang'an; it also explicitly records their subsequent discord. This line refers only to early cooperation, not a lifelong alliance. Sworn brotherhood comes from Dianlüe quoted in Pei Songzhi's annotations, not the main-text evidence for this relationship.
